The Art Series is a space for me to explore ideas that take my fancy. They may be they serious, quirky, or they may look like someone who has retired but not stayed on his medication. Whatever happens the Art Series will be either challenging, fun or hopefully both.
‘flamin’
Flamin’, is an Australian word sometimes used to “cuss” something rather than use a swear word. It’s not so commonly used, now but was a word of older generations. The Flamin’ series is about things that really annoy me. Gates that don’t shut and the cattle get out, very expensive riding boots that fall apart, carp that infest Australia’s rivers spoiling my fishing and computers which totally confuse me. I thought it was no good complaining about any of it, so I set them alight.*
*please not do not do this at home !

‘opera house lounge’
‘The Opera House Lounge’, complete with Road Kill Coffee table*, examines the changes in Australia since the Opera House was completed in 1973. ‘On the Sheep’s Back’ looks at how the Opera House was designed, in part, to show the world we weren’t just a country known for good wool but also have some culture worth seeing. ‘Whose Art is It Anyway’ asks the question, is it people or art critics who can determine what is art? ‘The Adoration of the Leather’ examines Australia’s attitude towards the arts, where sport is a national obsession which receives significant funding, while the arts receive very little financial support. Yet more people attend art events than attend sports events. ‘The Competition’s Tough Out There ‘examines how the gap between rich and poor has grown since 1973 in the so-called ‘ lucky country’.
*The Road Kill Coffee Table is a large faux wombat on a road base, as they are often seen, when struck by a vehicle. It is capped by a boomerang shaped glass table top. A seagull circles the Opera House Lounge when the photo is an outside one.
This series has more to come!
